Maasai Olympics
Finch Hattons arranges an afternoon activity called the sundowner...where guests are served drinks and snacks in the bush while being able to watch the sunset. Well it was incredibly cloudy so they taught us Maasai games that are played in the "Maasai Olympics".
Prior to 2012 Maasai men were taught to hunt and kill a lion by hand as a rite of passage to becoming a man. But since lions are the key drivers of essential tourism to the region, the tradition was discontinued. Instead Maasai men compete in an Olympic style game competition, with the winner afforded scholarship opportunities and a trip to NYC.
Noah and Isaac were the last generation of Maasai to hunt lions...Tuesday evening they taught us how to throw clubs and shoot bows and arrows. It was so much fun!
